The shape of these whaleback dunes is quite different from the other dunes in Death Valley National Park. Even though they are low and sweeping, some of the slopes are nearly vertical and quite steep. These isolated dunes cover a large area, yet go mostly unnoticed because the long, rough drive limits casual visitors. The Saline Valley Dunes gently rise up from the edge of the salt flat near the center of the Saline Valley. The majestic backdrop of the Inyo Mountain range towers nearly 10,000 feet above.
